- What is cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is one of the three most common malignant tumors in Korean women, and is the 5th highest cause of death.
Fortunately, cervical cancer slowly progresses from the previous stage of cancer to invasive cancer. Therefore, through regular checkups, cervical cancer can be completely cured if detected in the earlier stage.
What is a pap smear?
It is the extraction of cells from the cervix to test for abnormalities using a microscope. Cell extraction is simply carried out without pain during a gynecologic examination.
[Notes for before the Examination]
For 1 – 2 days prior to the examination, avoid sexual intercourse or washing of the vagina as much as possible (it is okay to wash the vulva.). For a week before the examination, do not use vaginal creams or birth control devices inserted into the vagina. Avoid having the examination during your menstruation period. The best time to have the examination is between 10 and 20 days after the first day of your menstruation cycle.
*It is advised to have a cervical examination regularly every 6 months. During a cervical cancer examination, it is recommended to receive an abdominal sonogram at the same time to examine the uterus and ovaries.
- A breast cancer examination can be done by self-examination, sonogram, x-ray, biopsy, etc. The Korean Breast Cancer Society recommends breast sonograms for people less than 30 years of age, breast sonograms and x-rays every 2 years for people 30 ~ 40 years of age, and breast sonograms and x-rays every year for people over 40 years of age. Breast sonograms are the best examination method used when nodules are detected in women aged less than 30, pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers.
- A sonogram is an essential test for every woman, and is used to detect abnormalities in the uterus and endometriosis, ovarian tumors, the status of ovulation, etc.
- A measles injection is a live attenuated vaccine. After the injection, you must be on birth control for 3 months. Then, check if the antibody has been formed before attempting to become pregnant.
